APPLICATION MATCHING/FIT FOR PURPOSE

Application matching, sometimes referred to as "Fit for Purpose" ensures that the right type of equipment is specified. Thus reducing costly overspend on incorrectly specified equipment. ON-SITE or SIMULATION TESTING forms the basis of application matching

Example 1: If a client wanted to reduce the amount of static electricity on a plastic film as part of a vertical from fill process, it is not a case of "one bar fits all purposes". Among many other variables, the amount of static in location on the plastic as well as the food stuff or fill, the distance of ionisation required etc. determines the type and output of bar that is required. Incorrect specification could mean ongoing contamination of the seal or inconsistent seals resulting in costly re-runs and or replacement of incorrect equipment.
Example 2: If a client wanted to ensure that a suction truck working in a zone 1 hazardous area reduced its' risk of accumulating static electricity in process it is not the case of "one earthing system fits all purposes". There are strict compliance requirements for this type of application. On some sites an earthing system capable of a 10 ohms or less resistance, interlocks and the ability to measure a connection to a verified independent earth of 10 ohms or less is required. System specification and compliance to the zone classification is critical. Some systems can only operate in a Zone 2 environment. Application matching in this instance is critical. Specifying and installing a system that is not suitable could increase the risk of fire and or explosion, injury to personnel and damage to plant and equipment.

EARTHING &
BONDING
Most people are unaware of the role the earth network
plays in relation to safely dissipating static electricity and lightning to earth. The
earth network on your site is critical in ensuring that static electricity and lightning
protection systems function as designed. Before you specify or design a static
electricity control or lightning protection system, have your earth network
tested or if it is a new site, have an expert evaluate the site for an appropriate earth
network. Functional earths are required for static electricity and
lightning protection systems. FUNCTIONAL EARTHS ARE
DIFFERENT TO YOUR NORMAL MEN TYPE PROTECTIVE EARTH.

AS/NZS 3000: Section 5.8 - "The earthing arrangements of the

AS/NZS 1020 - requires that your earth electrode acheive less than 10 ohms resistance to earth.
Incorrect Bonding practices accounts for 70% of all static related incidents. The difference between whether you have a bond between two objects is often dependant on what clamp you have chosen to use. Welding Clamps, Battery Jumper Lead clamps, clamps made from aluminium are not suitable for use in an industrial application. Static electricity control systems that monitor whether you have a bond or connection to true earth and provide visible indication and the capability of interlocking are best practice.

Lightning Protection Systems are only as good as the risk assessment, site survey, site audit, soil resistivity and earth resistance tests conducted. It is not only important to accurately assess risk, conduct an audit or site survey including the measurement of soil resistivity & earth resistance to ensure that a proposed lightning protection system will function as per requirements as set out in the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1768, it is also critical in providing the correct data for the lightning protection design team. For example this data is the foundation from which the design team will calculate the amount of electrodes required within an earth network and the location and depth to which the electrode will be driven. These calculations may determine whether a traditional electrode earth network will be utilised or whether due to high soil resistivity values or potential interference/electrical noise an electrolytic earth system is required.
